Issues

Campaign themes

2014

Cleaver's campaign website lists the following issues:[2]

  • Reform Our Tax System
Excerpt: "We cannot have fiscal responsibility without reforming our tax system. We need taxes to cover the cost of our military and other government oversight, however taxing middle-income people to the point where nearly 30% of their income is removed from their paycheck is unconscionable. I propose a 10% tax, across the board with no deductions."
  • Balance the Budget
Excerpt: "As a small business owner, husband, and father, I have always had to understand a balanced budget."
  • Cut Spending
Excerpt: "We must not spend more than we have. We must severely scrutinize every department and defund those that are either unnecessary or return the power to the states to oversee. Many departments, including the Department of Education needs to be on the state level, not national."
  • Reform Education
Excerpt: "Returning the oversight of Education to the state and local level not only eliminates money from the federal budget, it also gives the power back to the local governing authorities and enables the teachers themselves to have more control in the classroom."
  • Support and Defend Israel
Excerpt: "We must stand firm in our allegiance and our relationship with Israel. Our friend, Israel, sits in the middle of a region of instability … a region where we currently get 65% of our oil. Israel is our best ally and arguably our only true ally in a region where long-established governments can topple overnight."

2012

Cleaver's campaign website listed the following issues:[3]

  • Homeland Security
Excerpt: "I fully support our troops, and I believe that domestically, securing the borders is the first vital step we must take toward a common-sense approach toward immigration, both legal and illegal."
  • Return to American Heritage
Excerpt: "The story of America is a powerful one, and one that every American should know. Only by returning to our cultural roots in many aspects of our lives and our government can we ensure that America remains the greatest nation on Earth."
