Burger faced fellow Republicans Rick Austin, David Strickland, and John Wilkinson. In addition, Mary Beth Focer ran for the seat as a Democrat. Since no candidate received a majority of the vote on November 8, the top two vote getters--Austin and Wilkinson--proceeded to a run-off election on December 6.[2][3]
