Curtis Loftis, Jr. is the current Republican South Carolina Treasurer. He was first elected to the position in 2010 - the first time he ran for any office.[1] Loftis was also the Mitt Romney's 2012 campaign chairman in South Carolina.[2]

Loftis is running for re-election in 2014.[3]

Biography

Loftis is a native of Lexington County. In high school, he was active in sports and served as commander of the country's largest Naval JROTC unit. He graduated from the University of South Carolina where he was president of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and president of the student senate.

Loftis ran a local pest control business before his election as state treasurer. He established a private charity, the Saluda Charitable Foundation, that "focuses its giving on the education, nutrition and medical care of children, especially those with diabetes."[4]

Political career

Loftis was elected in 2010 with a number of other Tea Party candidates across the country. He ran on the promise of bringing accountability and transparency to the position. Upon assuming office, he became the first statewide officeholder in the nation to post his entire work calendar on-line and refused a state-issued car.[4]

As treasurer, Loftis serves as the chairman of the State Board of Financial Institutions, vice chairman of the State Budget & Control Board, vice chairman of the South Carolina Tobacco Authority, vice chairman of the South Carolina Education Authority, and a member of the South Carolina Retirement System Investment Commission.[5]

Loftis is running for a second term as state treasurer in the 2014 election. His announcement ended a period of deliberation over a potential bid to challenge incumbent Nikki Haley in the 2014 Republican primary for governor.[7] The general election takes place November 4, 2014.
