Political career

Kansas Secretary of Agriculture (2011-Present)

Illegal immigrant wavier

In January 2012, it was reported that Rodman was seeking a wavier from the federal government that would allow an arrangement where illegal immigrants could work for willing employers. He came up with the idea as a solution to the shortage of hired hands for ranches and farms.[3]

Rodman was backed in the move by a coaltion of conservative farm advocates and liberal social groups. In direct opposition has stood Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, who helped author tough anti-immigration bills in Arizona and Alabama, and has repeatedly tried to get similar laws passed in Kansas. Kobach said there is no shortage of workers, stating, "I hate to answer with the old adage about comparing apples and oranges, but to a certain extent, the crops rotting in the field argument is comparing - maybe not apples to oranges, but oranges to soybeans."[4]

Appointments

2011

Rodman was appointed as Kansas Secretary of Agriculture in January 2011 by Gov. Sam Brownback (R).[1]

Rodman stated, “After a career in agribusiness that included developing and managing facilities in the U.S. and abroad, this is an opportunity for me to serve Kansas agriculture.”[5]

Personal

Rodman and his wife, Ronda, have two children and four grandchildren.[2]
