Levine ran in a special election for California State Senate District 4. The seat is vacant following Doug LaMalfa's (D) resignation on August 31, 2012. Levine faced Jim Nielsen (R), Mickey Harrington (D) and Jann Reed (no party preference) in the blanket primary on November 6, 2012. The special election was scheduled for January 8, 2013.[1] However, Nielsen won the blanket primary outright, taking just over 50 percent of the vote. Thus, no general special election was necessary.[2]
