Cogdill was first elected to a four-year term on the state senate in November 2006. His current term ends in 2010. He also served in the California State Assembly from 2000-2006 and as a member of the Modesto City Council in the mid-90s.
Cogdill was the Senate Minority leader until February 18, 2009, when he was voted out of the leadership position and replaced by Dennis Hollingsworth by Senate Republicans who were unhappy over Cogdill's position on the 2009 California state budget compromise, which led to a set of six budget ballot propositions going on the May 19 special election ballot in California.[1],[2]
Cogdill joined Arnold Schwarzenegger and Democrat Darrell Steinberg on the campaign trail to push for the May 2009 ballot proposition package.[3]
Not seeking re-election in 2010
In a press release sent out November 10, 2009, Cogdill announced he would not be seeking re-election in 2010. While the release stated that he is planning to return to the private sector, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced that Cogdill was on his short list for lieutenant governor.[4]
In January 2010, Cogdill made it official that the government post he will seek next is county assessor in Stanislaus County.[5]
Legislative scorecard
Capitol Weekly, California's major weekly periodical covering the state legislature, publishes an annual legislative scorecard to pin down the political or ideological leanings of every member of the legislature based on how they voted on an assortment of bills in the most recent legislative session. The 2009 scores were based on votes on 19 bills, but did not include how legislators voted on the Proposition 1A (2009). On the scorecard, "100" is a perfect liberal score and "0" is a perfect conservative score. [6],[7]
On the 2009 Capitol Weekly legislative scorecard, Cogdill ranked as a 6. [8]
