After receiving his associate's degree from Concordia Lutheran College, Reichert went into the U.S. Air Force Reserves and the King County, Washington, police force. He was elected county sheriff in 1997, and he served there until being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.
Reichert is a member of the following House committees:
- Ways and Means Committee
- Subcommittee on Trade
- Subcommittee on Health
Reichert won re-election in 2012. He and Karen Porterfield (D) advanced past the August 7, 2012, blanket primary, defeating Keith Arnold (D), Ernest Huber (R), Keith Swank (R), and James Windle (I). They faced off again in the general election on November 6, 2012.
Redistricting in 2012 added conservative territory to Reichert's 8th district. As such, Reichert's main challenge may be from the right, rather than the Democratic opposition he has faced in previous years. Swank has claimed to be more conservative than the incumbent.
On November 2, 2010, Reichert won re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives, defeating Suzan DelBene (D).
