Bates was a Claims Adjuster for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company from 1963 to 1974. He then worked as a supervisor for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company from 1970 to 1974. Bates earned his BA in English from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst in 1963.
