Dean Skelos (b. February 16, 1948) is a Republican member of the New York State Senate. Skelos served in the New York State Assembly from 1981 to 1983. He then joined the New York State Senate in 1985. From 1995 to 2008, he was Deputy Majority Leader for Legislative Operations. He was briefly Temporary President/Majority Leader in the senate in 2009. He has served as Minority Leader in the 2009-2010 session and currently serves as Temporary President/Majority Leader, representing the 9th district.

Skelos works as Counsel for Ruskin Moscou Faltischek Professional Corporation.

Skelos earned his BA in History from Washington College in 1970. He went on to receive his JD from Fordham Law School in 1975.

Marijuana:
In June 2012, Skelos led the fight against a proposal by Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) that would have decriminalized the display of small amounts of marijuana. While possessing small amounts of marijuana is legal in the state, showing it to a police officer is not legal. Ultimately, Republicans were able to defeat the measure.[1]

Skelos is running in the 2012 election for New York State Senate District 9. He ran unopposed in the Republican primary on September 13, 2012. He is also running on the Conservative Party and Independence Party of New York State tickets. Thomas H. Feffer ran unopposed in the Democratic primary. The general election takes place on November 6, 2012. [2]

2010

Skelos ran unopposed in the September 14 Republican primary. He defeated George Sava(D) in the general election.[3] Skelos is running as a member of the Republican, Conservative, and Independence party.
