Shaughnessy is a former mayor of Charlotte, Michigan. She served as mayor from 2005-2009. Deb has also worked as a treasury clerk, staff writer for Charlotte Community Newspapers, and executive director of the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce. She also served as a legislative aide from January 1995 to December 2004.
Shaughnessy graduated from Lansing Community College with a general Associates Degree in Public relations in 2007.

Shaughnessy ran for re-election in the 2012 election for Michigan House of Representatives District 71. She was unopposed in the August 7 Republican primary and was defeated by Theresa Abed (D) in the general election which took place on November 6, 2012.
Shaughnessy won election to the District 71 Seat in 2010. Shee defeated Cheryl Haddock, Laurie Raines and Britt Slocum in the August 3 Republican primary. She defeated Theresa Abed (D) in the general election on November 2, 2010.
