Bordering the Atlantic Ocean, Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, Delaware is the second smallest of the fifty United States. Divided into three counties, Delaware was one of the original thirteen colonies, was the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution and is aptly nicknamed “the first state.” Currently, Delaware has one Democratic member of the U.S. Senate, a total of two Democratic members of the U.S. House of Representatives, 41 members of the Delaware House of Representatives and 21 members of the Delaware State Senate. As of September 2013, Delaware is one of 13 Democratic state government trifectas.
