Candidate for
U.S. House, New York, District 18
Duane Jackson is a 2012 Democratic candidate seeking election to the U.S. House representing the 18th Congressional District of New York.

Jackson is a U.S. Navy veteran who worked in city planning for 15 years before pursuing street vending. One day in 2010, the vendor spotted a smoking SUV. He called the police, and in doing so, thwarted a bomb plot in Times Square.[1]

Jackson is running in the 2012 election for the U.S. House, representing New York's 18th District. He is seeking Democratic Party ticket. He is opposed in the primary by Rich Becker, Matt Alexander, Tom Wilson, and Sean Maloney in the June 26 Democratic primary.[2]

According to The New York Times, cardiologist and Cortlandt town council member[3] Rich Becker and former Bill Clinton aide Sean Maloney are the frontrunners. The Times has endorsed Becker, based on the paper's concerns about Maloney's handling of an investigation of Eliot Spitzer.[4] Maloney, unsurprisingly, has gained the endorsement of his former boss, Bill Clinton,[4] along with the nod from major unions in the state. The New York State United Teachers, the state AFL-CIO, and some large SEIU locals.[5]

Wrappinger Falls Mayor Matt Alexander,[6] Tuxedo Park Mayor Tom Wilson,[7] and local hero Duane Jackson are also running.[5] Jackson, a street vendor, thwarted a bomb attempt in Times Square.[5]

Maloney stresses his endorsements, as well as his fundraising advantage over the rest of the Democratic candidates -- the funding, he says, will be necessary to unseat Hayworth in the general. Alexander, on the other hand, says that money will pour in to whoever opposes Hayworth.[8]
