Sand ran in the 2012 election for the U.S. Senate, representing North Dakota. Sand was defeated by U.S. Rep. Rick Berg in the primary June 12. The general election was November 6, 2012.[1][2]

Campaign funding

As of mid-April 2012, Sand was at a financial disadvantage heading into the Republican primary; he had just $81,000 in the bank and over $200,000 in debt, while his primary opponent, U.S. Rep. Rick Berg, had $1.6 million in campaign coffers.[3]
