Thompson, who has been a pastor for 17 years, has said that he ran for Congress to fix the root problem in America. According to Thompson, that is "turning away from our constitution and the biblical principles that made our nation exceptional." Thompson also added that “As we continue to turn further away, our nation continues to get worse in numerous ways. Until we return to these, nothing in America will change. We must address the root problem and not the symptoms.” Thompson has started two different churches, and helped a third recover from a church split.
Thompson ran in the 2012 election for the U.S. House, representing Oklahoma's 2nd District. He faced George Faught, Markwayne Mullin, Wayne Pettigrew, Dustin Rowe and Dakota Wood in the June 26, 2012 Republican Primary.
Thompson was defeated in the Republican primary on June 26, 2012.
