Ed McLaughlin was a Republican member of the South Dakota House of Representatives, representing District 34. McLaughlin was a candidate for the South Dakota State House of Representatives in 1998 but was not elected. He was then elected to the South Dakota House in 2003. He served in that position until 2011. In 2010, McLaughlin was ineligible to run under South Dakota's term limits.

McLaughlin has worked as an Educator and Mayor.
