Ernest Jeffrey Moniz (b. December 22, 1944, in Fall River, Massachusetts) is the current Secretary of the Department of Energy.[1] He was nominated on March 4, 2013, and unanimously confirmed by the Senate on May 16, 2013.[2][3] Moniz' confirmation process was one of many to have an extended wait in 2013.[3]

He previously served as Under Secretary of the Department of Energy, as well as Associate Director of Science in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.[4]

Biography

Moniz was born in Fall River, Massachusetts and attended B.M.C. Durfee High School before graduating from Boston College.[1] He earned a Doctorate in Theoretical Physics from Stanford University. Moniz has directed and served on the boards of scientific organizations and was the co-head of the MIT Energy Initiative before becoming Secretary of Energy.[5]
