On her campaign website Baquai has 6 leading issues that she is concerned about. They are: [3]

  • Economy and Job Growth: Excerpt: "[Baqai] will work within Congress and with the administration to develop programs that revive the economy and bring good paying jobs to third district."
  • Health Care: Excerpt: "We cannot afford to leave nearly 50 million Americans without healthcare. A comprehensive national healthcare program means that we will have more, not less, resources to spend on keeping the nation healthy."
  • Immigration: Excerpt: "[Baqai] believes that we need comprehensive immigration reform, rather than allow the individual states to create policies that target immigrant workers for unfair treatment."
  • Women's Rights: Excerpt: "She believes that we must fight against gender discrimination in employment and pay, expand support for programs that work to reduce violence against women, abroad, as well as at home, and work to end human trafficking."
  • Education: Excerpt: "Our schools need adequate funding to meet the challenges of preparing students to compete in the global job market. Funding for after-school and mentoring programs can assist in achieving these objects."
  • Veterans: Excerpt: "[Baqai] believes that we must expand benefits and services to veterans. It is critical for us to be more responsive to their health care needs...as well as increased funding for education and job training programs, and protections from mortgage foreclosures."

Baqai ran in the 2012 election for the U.S. House to represent Illinois' 3rd District. Baqai sought the nomination on the Democratic ticket. [4] The signature filing deadline was December 27, 2011, with the primary taking place on March 20, 2012. Incumbent Dan Lipinski ran for re-election on the Democratic ticket.

Daniel Lipinski was endorsed over Baqai. [5] Lipinksi was the only Illinois Democrat in the House to vote "no" on President Obama's national health care law, saying the program was unsustainable, and wanting strong language against federal funding of abortion.[5] According to a February 23, 2012 article in the Chicago Tribune, "His position was at odds with the White House, but in step with his district."[5]

Incumbent Daniel Lipinski defeated Baqai in the Democratic primary on March 20, 2012.[1] Republican candidate Richard Grabowski defeated Arthur Jones and Jim Falvey in the Republican primary, and will face Lipinski in the general election on November 6, 2012.[1]
