Campaign themes

Burgos’s website highlighted the following campaign themes:[3]

  • Economic Growth

Excerpt: "I will bring fiscal responsibility to the House of Delegates, I will fight to lower taxes, I will fight to decrease spending and I will work to make sure that Virginia continues to honor our constitutional duty of passing a balance budget. Fiscal responsibility in government allows the private sector to flourish."

  • Create Jobs

Excerpt: "Create upward mobility by creating more small business owners. We can do this by removing money as a requirement for taking state business licensing exams. Ability, knowledge and experience should be the only requirement for a business license. I will work to reduce burdensome regulation and red-tape so that small businesses can grow and create more jobs."

  • Improving Education

Excerpt: "We have public schools in our community that do good work. We also have public schools that don't foster the advance development of many individual children by dumbing down the curriculum. We have schools that don’t teach moral values that are an important part of our society. Providing parents the power of choice by having their education money follow their children will change our future for the better."

  • Transportation

Excerpt: "The transportation in Northern Virginia is unlike most other areas of the commonwealth. We have congestion, high volume and too many accidents. But Northern Virginia has to compete with all of Virginia for highway money. ...I will fight for Northern Virginia’s transportation dollars so that the Commonwealth’s economic engine can continue to run."

  • Social Services

Excerpt: "Our government has created a spending problem that is becoming embedded in to our culture. This needs to change. I will make sure state social programs will go to those who need them and I fight to cut out abuse and wasteful spending in this area."

Incumbent Eileen Filler-Corn (D) was first elected to the chamber in a 2010 special election, and she won by only 37 votes. Despite that narrow victory, her only opposition after redistricting in 2011 was a Libertarian candidate who managed to garner over 30 percent of the vote. This cycle, Filler-Corn faced Republican challenger Burgos and anti-corruption activist and rap video producer Christopher DeCarlo (I) in a race for this district that gave President Barack Obama (D) 57 percent of the vote in 2012 and Governor Bob McDonnell (R) 53 percent in 2009. DeCarlo's presence in the race could have complicated matters for Filler-Corn, and he is an experienced candidate after frequent runs for office, but he had not raised any money for his campaign as of September 2013.[5][6][7]

Burgos and his wife, Denise, have three daughters, Melani, Britney and Brooke. They live in Burke, VA.[2]
