Gomez was seeking election to the United States Senate seat vacated by John Kerry, after his confirmation by the U.S. Senate to Secretary of State. The Republican primary was April 30, 2013. He won the nomination in the Republican primary after defeating Michael Sullivan and Daniel Winslow. The general election took place on June 25, 2013. He was defeated by Ed Markey (D) in the general election.
