Gabriela Rosa (b. October 12, 1966) is a former Democratic member of the New York State Assembly, representing District 72 from 2012 to June 27, 2014. In June 2014, Rosa resigned from office after pleading guilty to marriage fraud. Rosa admitted to marrying in order to obtain U.S. citizenship.[1][2]

Biography

Rosa earned her B.A. in marketing from the Universidad Pedro Henriquez Urena in 1986 and her B.S. in economics from Instituto Tecnologico de Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. Her professional experience includes working as:

  • Senior policy advisor and legislative assistant in the Office of Herman Farrell,
  • Chief of staff of a city council member from the 10th City Council District,
  • English teacher at the Dominican American Institute.[3]

Controversies

Corruption

On June 27, 2014, Rosa pled guilty to committing marriage fraud in order to become a U.S. citizen. She resigned from office the same day.[2] Born in the Dominican Republic, Rosa admitted in federal court that she got married to "regularize [her] immigration status." Her corruption charges also included two counts of making false statements and another charge that related to a bankruptcy proceeding. She is due to be sentenced on October 3, 2014, and could face up to 10 years in prison. According to a plea agreement she will serve from 12 to 18 months.[1][7]
