Herbert previously served as the state's Lieutenant Governor of Utah. He succeeded Jon Huntsman, who left to take a position as U.S. Ambassador to China.[2]
Herbert ran in and won a special election in 2010 to determine who will serve out the remainder of Huntsman's term.
Biography
Gary R. Herbert was born in American Fork, Utah, and grew up in Orem, Utah. His parents are Duane and Carol Herbert. Herbert is married to Jeanette Snelson Herbert; they have six children and eight grandchildren. Their oldest daughter, Kimberli, is married to Montreal Alouettes slotback Ben Cahoon, and their youngest son, Brad, is married to American Idol contestant Carmen Rasmusen.
After graduating from Orem High School, Mr. Herbert served a two year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Eastern Atlantic States Mission. He also attended Brigham Young University.
While studying at Brigham Young University, Herbert joined the Utah National Guard, serving for six years as a staff sergeant. When his military service was completed, he embarked on a career in real estate, founding Herbert & Associates Realtors, a brokerage firm based in Orem. Herbert and his wife, Jeannette, also founded and ran a child care service in Orem for 23 years.
Political career
Prior to his election as Lieutenant Governor of Utah, Herbert served fourteen years on the Utah County Commission, serving as chairman. Herbert also served as the president of the Utah Association of Counties, where he was named as Utah's Outstanding County Commissioner and County Elected Official. He is also the recipient of the National Outstanding Republican County Elected Official of the Year award.
