Sayler graduated with his Bachelor's degree in History from the University of Montana in 1967 and his Master's in Religious Studies from Hartford Seminary in 1973. Sayler earned his teaching certificate from the University of Idaho and also served in the US Army during the Vietnam era from 1968 to 1969.
Sayler is a former high school teacher teaching from 1974 to 2005.
