Smith earned his BA from Wofford College in 1990. He went on to receive his JD from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1993.
Smith worked for Young, Young & Reiter from 1993 to 1998. He was also a part-time Assistant Public Defender from 1995 to 1998.
