The Georgia Department of Education oversees public K-12 education in Georgia. Article VII, section three of the Georgia Constitution created Superintendent of Schools to supervise public education. The department managed 1,639,077 students and 2,289 schools during the 2011-2012 school year.[2]

State Board of Education

The State Board of Education is comprised of 15 members, including the [[[Georgia State Superintendent of Schools|Superintendent of Schools]]. The other members of the board are representatives for the 14 congressional districts. They are appointed by the Governor with the consent of the State Senate for seven-year terms. The purpose of the board is to set policies and regulations for the state's public school system.[6]
