A Georgia Horse Race Gambling Measure may appear on the November 2012 ballot in Georgia as a legislatively-referred state statute. The measure would establish a nine-member racing commission and establish how parimutuel betting would be regulated in the state of Georgia. Generated funds would be directed towards college scholarships, pre-Kindergarten and trauma care.[1]

Parimutuel betting refers to a form of betting in which bets are pooled together and distributed among those who bet correctly at the outcome of the event. This form of betting is most common for sports events like horse racing. According to reports, an estimated 40 states allow parimutuel betting.[2]

The proposed measure was introduced by Rep. Harry Geisinger.

Path to the ballot

The measure requires approval on a two-thirds vote by both the State House and State Senate.[3]
