Minority judges

Jefferson Parish, Louisiana

In 2012, Jackson will re-introduce a proposal in which he will resume his efforts to increase the number of minority judges in Louisiana's 24th Judicial District. The 24th Judicial district covers Jefferson Parish and corresponds to his own district, House District 87.[6] Jackson had hoped to implement his plan to add a third minority judge through House Bill 523, however time ran out when the session ended on June 23. [7]

Currently, out of the 16 judges in the 24th District, two are African-American, and are elected from a subdistrict in which minorities comprise the majority of voters. Jackson has proposed that a third judge be elected from that same subdistrict, or the next subdistrict that sees a vacancy after January 1, 2012. [7]
