Glenwood City Mayor and Council recall, Wisconsin (2013)
An effort to recall Mayor John Larson and city council members Nancy Hover and Dave Graese in Glenwood City, Wisconsin, from their positions was launched in October 2013. "Malfeasance" is the reason for the recall, according to supporters. The effort was launched by a group called "Glenwood City Citizens for Legal and Ethical Representation."
The recall effort was triggered over the handling of a proposed frac sand mine that would be built a half-mile south of a school. Some argued against it, citing public health, safety and quality of life. Others supported it because of the promise of jobs and a better economic outlook. More specifically, residents argued that there was a lack of transparency and that city officials negotiated privately with Vista Sand. In addition to the recall, residents were asking for a referendum "on whether land needed for the mine should be annexed into Glenwood City."
The election took place on December 17, 2013. All three of the people targeted by the recall effort retained their positions.
Mayoral recall election:
Mayor John Larson beat out his opponent, Ken Peterson, 183 to 140 votes. Council member Nancy Hover retained her position, beating challenger Barb Standaert 163 to 160 votes. Council member Dave Graese beat his opponent, Chris Schone, 162 to 160 votes.
