Lavelle ran in the 2012 election for Delaware State Senate District 4. Lavelle ran unopposed in the Republican primary on September 11, 2012, and defeated incumbent Michael Katz (D) and Marcia Groff (R) in the general election which took place on November 6, 2012. [4][5]

Lavelle won re-election to the 11th District Seat in 2010. He had no opposition in the primary election. Lavelle defeated Joshua Samuel Schoenberg (D) in the November 2, 2010 general election.[6]
