Guillermo Linares is a 2014 Democratic candidate for District 72 of the New York State Assembly.

He is a former Democratic member of the New York State Assembly, representing District 72 from 2011 to 2013.

Linares served on the New York City Council from 1992 to 2001. He later became the Commissioner of the Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs. He has worked as a school teacher and served on a local school board before being appointed by President Clinton as the chair of the White House Initiative for Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans.

Biography

Linares earned his B.S. and his M.S. from City College. He holds a professional diploma in administration and supervision from Fordham University and his doctorate in education from Teachers College, Columbia University. He is married and has two children and a granddaughter.

Elections for the office of New York State Assembly will take place in 2014. A primary election took place September 9, 2014. The general election will be held on November 4, 2014. The signature-filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was July 10, 2014. Guillermo Linares defeated Francesca Castellanos, Manny De Los Santos, Mayobanex Villalona and Melanie Hidalgo in the Democratic primary, while Ronnie Cabrera was unopposed in the Republican primary. Linares and Cabrera will face off in the general election.[1]

Linares ran in the 2012 election for New York State Senate District 31. He was defeated by incumbent Adriano Espaillat in the Democratic primary on September 13, 2012.[2][3][4][5]

Linares ran in the 2010 election for New York State Assembly District 72. He defeated four candidates in the September 14 Democratic primary. Linares went on to defeat Dan Russo (R) in the general election on November 2.[6]
