After retiring from the Marines, he worked as vice president of Agusta Westland, Inc., an Anglo-Italian helicopter company, and for the defense division of auto maker Rolls-Royce. Vander Linden holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa and a master's from the University of Southern California.
