The current superintendent is Kathryn Matayoshi, who was appointed by the Board of Education effective September 13, 2010. Previously, she served as acting/interim superintendent from January 8, 2010 - September 12, 2010. Matayoshi's term will expire on September 13, 2014.
Before becoming superintendent, Matayoshi served as deputy superintendent from July 2009 to January 2010. Before joining the Department of Education, she was executive director of the Hawaii Business Roundtable from 2007 to 2009, president and CEO of Community Links Hawaii from 2006 to 2007, a strategic planning consultant from 2005 to 2007, and the chief of staff of the City and County of Honolulu Board of Water Supply from 2002 to 2005. Earlier in her career, she was director of the Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs from 1995 to 2002, before which she worked for the Hawaiian Electric Company, Inc., and the law firm of Goodsill Anderson Quinn & Stifel. Matayoshi holds a bachelor's degree from Carleton College in Northfield, MN, and a J.D. from the University of California Hastings College of the Law.
The office of superintendent is established by state law.

The board shall appoint, and may remove, the superintendent by a majority vote of its members.
There are no particular qualifications required of the superintendent of education.
The superintendent is appointed by the Hawaii Board of Education to terms "of up to four years." After appointment, the superintendent may be removed by the board, though only for cause, by a majority vote of the board's members.
There are no term limits associated with the office of superintendent of education.
There is no special vacancy procedure for superintendents.
The superintendent is the administrative head and chief executive officer of Hawaii's public school system. His office is responsible for managing the operational aspects of the school system, such as providing necessary personnel, equipment, materials and certifications. The superintendent also carries out policy initiatives developed by the Hawaii Board of Education.
