Joseph Heath Shuler (b. December 31, 1971) is a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives from North Carolina. Shuler was elected by voters from North Carolina's 11th congressional district.

On February 2, 2012, Shuler announced he would not run for re-election in 2012.[1]

Based on an analysis of bill sponsorship by GovTrack, Shuler is a "centrist Democrat".[2]


Shuler was born in Bryson City, North Carolina. He earned his B.A. from the University of Tennessee in 2001.[3]


Before earning his degree, Shuler played professional football. He later returned to finish his degree, and then started a real estate brokerage and has been involved in that industry.[4]

On February 2, 2012, Shuler announced he would not run for re-election after serving three terms.[1] Mark Meadows (R) defeated Hayden Rogers (D) in the general election.


On November 2, 2010, Shuler was re-elected to the United States House for a third term. He defeated Jeff Miller (R).[7]
