An edit summary is a brief explanation of an edit that has been made to a page. Edit summaries are optional but recommended. You insert or create an edit summary before you save an edit you are planning to save. You create the edit summary in a small "Edit summary" field that appears under the main edit-box.

The edit summary field looks like this:

  • Filling in the Edit Summary field before you save your edit is a recommended practice.
  • When you fill in the Edit Summary, you make it possible for others to get a general idea of the nature of your edit simply by glancing through a page's edit history.
  • You can set your user preferences (under Editing) to "Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary".
  • This screenshot tutorial provides additional information on how to use this feature.
