Illinois state hub.jpg

Welcome to Illinois on Ballotpedia!

As the 25th most extensive and the fifth most populous of the 50 states, the state of Illinois has been home to three U.S. Presidents: Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant and, most recently, Barack Obama. Nicknamed "the Land of Lincoln,” Illinois has a broad economic base and serves as a major transportation hub. While the most populous city in Illinois is Chicago, its capital is Springfield.

The organization of the central government of Illinois is largely the same as every other state (having three branches of government: executive, legislative, and judicial), but below this top level, the substructure of the government of Illinois is extremely complex - arguably the most complex of all 50 states. Illinois has more units of local government than any other state - over 8,000 in all. Illinois has two members of the U.S. Senate, a total of seventeen members of the U.S. House of Representatives, 118 members of the Illinois House of Representatives and 59 members of the Illinois State Senate.
