The Illinois State Board of Education oversees K-12 public education in the state of Illinois. The board was created in 1970 following the ratification of the Illinois Constitution. Article X, Section 2 of the Constitution created the position of Superintendent of Education to supervise public education.[2] The Board managed 4,493 schools and 2,072,991 students during the 2013-2014 school year.[3]
