There were 6,015 state legislative districts with a seat up for election on November 6, 2012, in 44 states. We took a look at each of the 44 states to see how many state legislative incumbents who chose to run for re-election in 2012 faced no primary or general election challenger.

Our main findings:

  • The incumbent chose to run for re-election in 4,783 (79.5%) of the 6,015 districts holding state legislative elections in 2012.
  • Of those 4,783 incumbents, a total of 1,237 (25.9%) did not face a primary or general election challenger.
  • A total of 266 incumbent senators did not face a primary or general election challenger.
  • A total of 971 incumbent representatives did not face a primary or general election challenger.
