Two Independence Township Fire Levy Measures were on the August 7, 2012 ballot in the township of Indepenence, which is in Oakland County.

The first measure sought to renew the current fire levy which is set at a rate of $3.71 per $1,000 of assessed value for an ongoing amount of time in order to continue to pay for fire and emergency services in the township. It was approved.

The second measure sought to increase the current fire levy by a rate of $.59 per $1,000 of assessed value for an ongoing amount of time in order to further pay for fire and emergency services in the township.

Text of measure

The question on the ballot:

Question 1: This proposed millage is a renewal of previously authorized millage for the above-stated purpose. Approval of this proposal would renew a tax limitation increase of $3.17 per $1,000 of taxable value on all taxable property in the Township. It is estimated that this proposal would result in the authorization to collect $4,217,400.00 in the first year if approved and levied. It is estimated that 95.68% of the annual millage revenue would be disbursed to the Charter Township of Independence for fire and emergency services and, as required by law, 4.32% would be disbursed to the Township’s Sashabaw Road Corridor Improvement Authority. The amount disbursed to the Sashabaw Road Corridor Improvement Authority shall be collected solely from properties within the Sashabaw Road Corridor Improvement Authority District.

Question 2: This proposed millage authorizes new additional millage for the above-stated purpose. Approval of this proposal would permit an additional tax limitation increase of 59 cents per $1,000 of taxable value on all taxable property in the Township. It is estimated that this proposal would result in the authorization to collect an additional $785,240.00 in the first year if approved and levied. It is estimated that 95.68% of the annual millage revenue would be disbursed to the Charter Township of Independence for fire and emergency services and, as required by law, 4.32% would be disbursed to the Township’s Sashabaw Road Corridor Improvement Authority. The amount disbursed to the Sashabaw Road Corridor Improvement Authority shall be collected solely from properties within the Sashabaw Road Corridor Improvement Authority District.[1][2]
