The Indiana Auditor of State is an elected state executive position in the Indiana state government. The auditor serves as the chief financial officer of the government of Indiana.

Current Officeholder

The current auditor is Tim Berry. He was first elected in 2006[1] and won re-election 2010.[2]

Authority

Article 6, Section 1 of the Indiana Constitution addresses the office of state auditor:[3]

There shall be elected, by the voters of the state, a Secretary, an Auditor and a Treasurer of State, who shall, severally, hold their offices for four years. They shall perform such duties as may be enjoined by law; and no person shall be eligible to either of said offices, more than eight years in any period of twelve years.

Elections

The auditor is elected every four years during midterm elections (2010, 2014, 2018, etc.).[3] The auditor takes office on January 1 following the election.[4]

Duties

The Auditor of Indiana is responsible for maintaining all State accounts, which include obligations to other governing bodies and individuals (state employee compensation, tax money distribution, etc.). They also report to the state legislature on odd numbered years a complete report of all things financial that relate to the auditor position of the previous two years.[4]
