Welcome to Iowa on Ballotpedia!


Located in the Midwestern United States, Iowa is landlocked by the Mississippi River, Missouri River, Wisconsin, Illinois, South Dakota, Missouri, Nebraska and Minnesota. Nicknamed "the Hawkeye State,” Iowa is the 30th most populous of the 50 United States and has been one of the safest states in which to live. Iowa's capital and largest city is Des Moines.

Currently, Iowa has two members of the U.S. Senate, a total of four members of the U.S. House of Representatives, 100 members of the Iowa House of Representatives and 25 members of the Iowa State Senate.

The structure of the Iowa judicial system is laid out in Article V of the state constitution. The state court system is made up of the Iowa Supreme Court, the Iowa Court of Appeals and the Iowa District Courts.


The federal court system is made up of four federal courts: the Northern District of Iowa, the Southern District of Iowa and their corresponding bankruptcy courts. Appeals from these courts are heard in the Eighth Circuit Court.
