The Iowa Director of Education is a state executive position in the Iowa state government.

The department was created by the 35th General Assembly in 1913 and was originally called the Department of Public Instruction. The current name was adopted in 1986.

Current officeholder

The current officeholder is Jason Glass.[1] Glass was appointed to the position by Gov. Terry Branstad and subsequently confirmed by the Iowa Senate in 2011. His 4 year term is not set to expire until 2015, however Glass is scheduled to resign as director on July 1, 2013, in order to become superintendent of the Eagle County School District.[2][3]
