The Iowa Director of Education is a state executive position in the Iowa state government.

The department was created by the 35th General Assembly in 1913 and was originally called the Department of Public Instruction. The current name was adopted in 1986.[1]

Current officeholder

The current interim officeholder is Duane Magee.[2] Governor Terry Branstad appointed Magee, the executive director of the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners since July 2013, to serve as a temporary replacement for resigned director Jason Glass while they search for someone to officially take over the position.[3] Glass' term was not set to expire until 2015, but he left office early in order to become superintendent of the Eagle County School District.[4][5] In August 2013, Branstad appointed Brad Buck as the next director, to formally replace Glass in the office.[6] Buck's appointment will take effect no later than September 1, 2013.

Chapter 1, Section 3:

The director is responsible for exercising general supervision over the state system of public education and nonpublic schools to the extent that is necessary to ascertain compliance with provisions of the Iowa school laws. The director performs the function of executive officer of the state board of education.[7]

Qualifications

Iowa Administrative Code, Education Department 281, Chapter 1.3. establishes the qualifications of the office:

The director shall possess a background in education and administrative experience.[8]

Appointments

The director is appointed by the Governor for a four-year term and is subject to confirmation by the Iowa State Senate.
