Kim Reynolds, a members of Iowa's Senate, was the Republican nominee; the Democratic Party nominated Patty Judge. In the end, Reynolds, on a ticket with Terry E. Branstad, was victorious. Lt. Governor-elect Reynolds begins her term in early 2011.
The deadline for submission of nominating signatures to qualify for the primary ballot was March 19, 2010.
Iowa law requires a 35% plurality in the primaries for a candidate to win the nomination via balloting. If a party primary gives no candidate plurality, the respective party's nominating convention will choose a candidate to advance to the general election.
Iowa is one of 20 states where candidates for governor and lt. governor run on a single ticket. Although the gubernatorial primary is past, winning candidates have not yet announced running mates.
