J. Gary Pretlow (b. August 27, 1949) is a Democratic member of the New York State Assembly, representing District 89. He was first elected to the chamber in 1992.

He previously represented District 87 in the New York State Assembly from 2003 to 2013, and District 84 in the Assembly from 1993 to 2002. Pretlow is presently the district leader for Mount Vernon. His political experience also includes being a member of the Mount Vernon City Council and participating in the Democratic City Committee.


Prelow earned an A.S. from Queensborough and a B.B.A. from Baruch College.[1] Pretlow is a financial planner with Moncur-Pretlow and Company. His professional experience includes being an assistant controller of The Limited, as a manager of accounting for Bloomingdale's, as an accountant, an insurance Salesman, and as a stock broker.[2]

Pretlow ran in the 2012 election for New York State Assembly District 89. He ran unopposed in the Democratic primary on September 13, 2012. He also ran on the Working Families Party and Independence Party of New York State tickets. He defeated Rosemarie Jarosz in the general election which took place on November 6, 2012. [3][4]

Pretlow ran unopposed in the September 14 Democratic primary. Pretlow defeated Samuel Rivers (Independence) in the general election on November 2.[5] In addition to running on the Democratic ticket, he ran on the Working Familes ticket.
