James Welch is a Democratic member of the Massachusetts State Senate, representing the Hampden district since 2011. He formerly served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, representing the Sixth Hampden from 2004 to 2011.

Welch is a realtor. He is a member of the Dante Club, May Institute Human Rights Committee, Westfield Elks, and West Springfield Rotary Club.

Welch attended Westfield State College, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management.

Welch won election to the Hampden senate seat in 2010. He defeated Susan Dawson and Ronald Patenaude in the September 14 Democratic primary. He defeated Robert Magovern (R) in the general election on November 2, 2010.
