Haverly was on the Rapid City School Board from 2000 to 2002. He was the First Vice President for the Rapid City Board of Education from 2001 to 2002. He has served in the South Dakota State House from 2002 to the present. He joined the South Dakota State Senate in 2009 and has served in that position since. He represents the 35th district.
Haverly was a Flight Crew Evaluator for the United States Air Force from 1978 to 1996. He has been the owner and manager of Kid Kastle, Incorporated, of Kids Kastle West Limited Liability Company since 1990.
Haverly attended Black Hills State University.
