Lovely won election in the 2012 election for Massachusetts State Senate District Second Essex District. She defeated Mary-Ellen Manning, John P. Slattery, and Edward J. Carroll in the September 6 Democratic primary and defeated Richard Jolitz (R) in the general election which took place on November 6, 2012.[2][3]
