Joe Mathews is a political journalist based in California.

Since 2010, he has written for Prop Zero. He previously wrote for Blockbuster Democracy.

Mathews is a senior fellow at the New America Foundation, a contributing writer at the Los Angeles Times, an associate editor at Zocalo Public Square, and a fellow at Arizona State University's Center for Social Cohesion.


Mathews co-wrote California Crackup: How Reform Broke the Golden State and How We Can Fix It (University of California, 2010).

In 2006, he wrote The People's Machine: Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Rise of Blockbuster Democracy (PublicAffairs, 2006).
