John Neely Kennedy (b. November 21, 1951) is the Louisiana State Treasurer. Kennedy, a Republican, assumed office in January 2000. He was elected to a fourth term in 2011.[1] In August 2007 Kennedy switched parties, from Democrat to Republican.[2]

Biography

Kennedy was born in Centreville, Mississippi. He is married and has one child. Kennedy is an adjunct professor at LSU Law School and a volunteer substitute teacher for East Baton Rouge Parish public schools.

Kennedy was first elected as Insurance Commissioner in 1999 and has been re-elected since. He was a candidate for U.S. Senate in 2004 and 2008.

Kennedy served as Special Council to Louisiana Governor Buddy Roemer from 1988-1992, Secretary in the Governor's Cabinet from 1990-1992, and Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Revenue from 1996-1999.[3]

Louisiana Treasurer 2000-present

As state treasurer Kennedy oversees the state’s $10.6 billion investment portfolios, as well as local and state bond issues and returns unclaimed property.[4]

Elections

2015

Kennedy is considered a run for Governor of Louisiana in 2015. Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) is term limited and cannot seek re-election.[5]

2011

Kennedy ran for a fourth term as state treasurer in 2011. Since he did not draw any opposition he was automatically re-elected.[1]

2007

Kennedy won re-election as state treasurer in the November 2007 election unopposed.
