On November 8, Wilkinson faced fellow Republicans Rick Austin, Curtis Burger, and David Strickland as well as Democrat Mary Beth Focer. Since no candidate received a majority of the vote, the top two vote getters--Austin and Wilkinson--proceeded to a runoff election on December 6 where Austin was defeated.[8][9][10]
