In February 2012, the grassroots organization Democracy for America, founded by Howard Dean, named Hernandez one of the top 10 progressive candidates in the 2012 U.S. House races.[1]

Hernandez is running in the 2012 election for the U.S. House, representing California's 10th District. He is running against Mike Barkley (D), district 19 incumbent Jeff Denham (R), Chad Condit (Ind), and Troy Wayne McComak (Ind) in the June 5, 2012, open primary.[2]
